First-term U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, D-Bay City, last week led the introduction of a bill called the Reverse Big Ugly Tax Breaks for Data Centers Act, which she says would pull back on tax “giveaways” for data center development.
McDonald Rivet blamed Republicans’ massive domestic policy bill passed last year for expanding tax breaks that have contributed to the surge in data center construction.
Her legislation with Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina would exclude data centers from being able to take the 100% bonus depreciation tax deduction and from being eligible for Opportunity Zone tax benefits, according to a bill summary.
“Washington is giving handouts to Big Tech companies while American families are drowning — I hear that word, ‘drowning,’ all the time from working parents back home,” McDonald Rivet said in a statement. “Tax cuts need to go to families, not data centers.”
