Michigan Senator Kristen McDonald Rivet launches first ad for 8th Congressional District

Democratic State Senator Kristen McDonald Rivet launched an opening TV ad on Tuesday for her campaign for the 8th Congressional District.

“Built This,” which can be viewed online, highlights McDonald Rivet’s working-class roots and efforts to uplift middle-class families in Michigan. The 60-second spot, along with a 30-second counterpart, will be backed by a six-figure investment on Flint broadcast, cable and digital channels.

“I am proud of where I came from, and I know exactly who I am fighting for,” McDonald Rivet said. “That’s why in the Senate, we passed the largest tax cut for working families in state history, and in Congress, I will keep fighting to lower costs and bring good-paying jobs to mid-Michigan.”

McDonald Rivet has received endorsements from retiring Congressman Dan Kildee, the Detroit Free Press, EMILY’s list, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the AFL-CIO, UAW, and dozens of other local leaders and unions.

The campaign to succeed Kildee in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District – rated a Toss-Up by the Cook Political Report – will be among the most competitive and contested U.S. House races in the country in 2024.

“Both my parents taught my sisters and me, excuses don’t solve problems, hard work will,” McDonald Rivet states in the commercial. “I’ve carried that with me my whole life.”

McDonald Rivet is running against Michigan State Board of Education President Pamela Pugh and former Flint Mayor Matt Collier in the August Democratic primary. Republican candidates include Paul Junge, Mary Draves and Anthony Hudson.

The 8th Congressional District covers Genesee, Saginaw and Bay counties, as well as a portion of Midland and Tuscola counties.
